What’s new with our Homebuyer Classes

As part of our Homeownership Program, future Habitat Kent Homeowners complete a series of classes on financial and homeownership education. Now, we’re excited to also offer many of these classes to the general public. Plus, they’re free to attend! While some of the classes are mainstays of our program, others are new additions.

Introduction to Homeownership
Introduction to Homeownership is offered quarterly and covers topics like fair housing and fair lending, and budgeting and credit. It is a HUD-certified class and is a prerequisite to apply for down payment assistance through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. While other organizations offer this course to the public as well, most have a fee to attend.

Home Maintenance Class
Our Home Maintenance Class is also offered quarterly. In this hands-on class led by our construction team, attendees learn about different home maintenance tasks at one of our current homes. It covers tool usage, drywall repair, filter changes, fire prevention, and more.

Money Smart
This four-part series is offered in partnership with Mercantile Bank every quarter. Each of the four classes focuses on a different aspect of money management including banking basics, budgeting, saving and understanding credit.

Homeownership Program Info Sessions
One of our new offerings is our Homeownership Info Sessions, held bi-monthly. These sessions outline our program to anyone interested in learning more about partnering with Habitat Kent on their homeownership journey.  Attendees also hear from Habitat for Humanity of Michigan about their one-on-one homeownership coaching services and from one of our partner lenders, ChoiceOne Bank or Mercantile Bank, about the lending process.
